  • Why opt for Automatic Driving Lessons

Choosing automatic lessons means you can skip the juggle of a clutch and gearstick, letting you dive straight into the essentials of safe, confident driving. With fewer controls to master, you’ll:

    • Learn Faster:

Concentrate on roadcraft and observation rather than clutch timing, shortening your overall lesson count.

    • Reduce Stress:

Eliminate gear-change worries so you can focus on traffic, junctions, and hazards.

    • Save Money:

Fewer lessons needed means lower costs – no extra sessions spent practising complex pedal coordination.

    The Comfort of Automatic Driving

An automatic car takes the strain out of busy roads and tricky manoeuvres:

    • Effortless Traffic Navigation:

No stop-start fatigue in congestion—just smooth acceleration and braking.

    • Enhanced Focus:

Free from gear changes at roundabouts or junctions, you can better anticipate other road users and choose your lane with confidence.

    • Relaxed Experience:

Enjoy a calmer drive overall, whether you’re on your first lesson or refining your motorway skills.

    Have Questions? We've Got Answers!

Here you'll find the answers to common questions about using Ready Set Drive! If it looks like we've missed something, please feel free to get in touch with us!

    • Arrange a suitable date, time & location with your driving instructor – driving lesson length is typically 2 hours. Your driving lessons will be tailored to your needs and experience; beginners will first learn how to use the controls of the car in a quiet and safe environment. Once familiar with the controls, you will be expertly guided around Peterborough whilst your experienced driving instructor provides you with useful advice helping you feel comfortable and safe behind the wheel.

    • The minimum age to learn to drive is 17, so assuming you are 17 or older, the first step is to acquire a provisional driving licence from the DVLA – click here to apply for your provisional driving licence – which will normally arrive within 2 weeks of the DVLA receiving your application. It can take longer if you need to notify the DVLA about any driving-related medical conditions. You also need to read a car number plate from 20.5 metres away (approximately 5 car lengths) using your glasses or contact lenses if you need them. Now you are ready to start driving lessons with a driving instructor. Exciting stuff!

    • Refresher lessons are suitable for all ages. If you haven't driven for a long period of time and want to brush up on your driving skills, a refresher course will bring you back up to scratch with modern traffic flow and give you the confidence to drive alone on busy roads.

    • The number of lessons you require all depends on the individual. After your first lesson, your driving instructor will recommend a suitable number of lessons

    • If you're new to Peterborough, your driving instructor will guide you through Peterborough's tricky roads and junctions so you can drive safely and confidently.

    • Firstly, your driving instructor will help get your car control skills back up to scratch with simple advice on quiet roads. You can also practice any manoeuvres you want to improve. When you feel confident with your car control ability, your driving instructor will guide you through simple routes to help brush up on your road procedure knowledge. You will be progressively taken on busier roads until you feel confident driving at high speed on busy multilane roads with roundabouts and traffic lights.

    • Before you can take driving lessons or book your theory and practical tests you need to obtain your Provisional Driving Licence and be able to read a car number plate at a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet). If you are unsure about your eyesight, it is recommended you consult your opticians.

    • Everyone is different; after a few driving lessons, your driving instructor will be able to tell you roughly how many hours you'll need. To give you an idea, the national average is 52 hours of driving lessons with a professional driving instructor combined with 25 hours of supervised practice in a private car.

    • The important things to practice are as follows: Joining the motorway, Good observation, Lane discipline, Keeping your distance, Lane changes, Overtaking, Road signs, Leaving the motorway and Motorway junctions

    • Students will only be allowed the use of the driving instructor’s car for a driving test if the driving instructor agrees that the student is at test standard. The driving instructor reserves the right to refuse the use of their car for the practical driving test if, in their professional opinion, the student has not reached a sufficient standard of competence to take full responsibility for the safety of the vehicle and other road users. Where possible, the driving instructor may recommend further driving lessons if there is time available before the test date; however, if the standard required is still not met, the driving instructor reserves the right to refuse the use of their car for test purposes.

Where the use of the driving instructor’s car is withheld for a driving test, the driving instructor will, where possible, give the student sufficient notice to enable the student to cancel the test without loss of the test fee. No responsibility will be taken by the driving instructor for withdrawing the use of the car for the driving test when the driving instructor assesses the student as not being ready for test.
